Drew Loftus apparently believes the Hawaii football program is worth the price of admission.

In turning down two scholarship offers, Loftus has decided to join the Warriors as a walk-on. He reports Aug. 2, the starting day for newcomers participating in the Warriors’ training camp.

"Hawaii looks like a fun place to play," said Loftus, who will compete as a receiver.

As a senior at Kennewick (Wash.) High, Loftus was named to the ‘ 2010 3-A All-State football team, which was selected by sports writers from across Washington. Loftus was Kennewick’s quarterback, punter and punt returner.

As an outfielder, he was selected to Baseball Northwest’s Top 100 list.

Washington offered Loftus a partial scholarship in baseball. New Mexico State offered a full ride in football.

Loftus said he preferred to play football, and that the Warriors were the best match.

"It’s the type of offense I want to fit in to," Loftus said.

Loftus attended this year’s Pro Bowl. During the trip, he took an unofficial visit to the UH campus.

In mulling his options, he met with family friends Kyle and Tyson Kafentzis. Kyle Kafentzis is among five brothers who played defensive back for the Warriors. Tyson Kafentzis, Kyle’s nephew, and his brother Landon also were Warriors.

Loftus said he is 6 feet 2 and 185 pounds. He is capable of running 40 yards in 4.5 seconds.

His hobbies include snowboarding, longboarding and playing the guitar.

"Mostly mellow stuff, a little Jack Johnson," he said.

Football camps on tap

The first of three UH football camps begins this weekend with the Big Man’s Camp Friday through Sunday on the Manoa campus.

The camp is designed for offensive and defensive linemen. Cost is $90 for those registering online (www.hawaiiathletics.com) and $100 for walk-up applicants.

The camp is scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. each day. Check-in begins at 8 a.m.
