The Department of Land and Natural Resources closed beaches this afternoon in the Keauhou Bay area after a shark bit a surfboard, the second such incident in the past four days at a surf spot known as Lyman’s.

The incident occurred at about 1:15 p.m. when a surfer felt a shark nudge and bite her surfboard, pulled it halfway underwater, then let it go, a fire official said. The woman was unharmed.

Fire Department personnel helped get all the swimmers out of the water at beaches in the immediate area, including Laaloa Beach Park and Kahaluu Beach Park. 

A helicopter flew over the coastline, but no shark was spotted.

On Sunday, a woman reported being knocked off her paddleboard by a large shark, which also bit her board.
