A memorial fund has been established to help to pay funeral expenses for the Palolo mother of 10 who was killed Friday in an apparently random shooting in Kaimuki.

The family of Tammy Nguyen is asking for help through donations to a fund established at the Bank of Hawaii, a family spokeswoman said.

Nguyen, 54, was married and mother to eight boys and two girls.

Myle Nguyen described her mother as a hard worker and native of Vietnam who wed their father in an arranged marriage at the age of 16.

“Basically, she was just the best mom,” Nguyen said. “If she had a dollar, she’d give it to you.”

The family moved to Hawaii from California about 16 years ago, joining other relatives here, she said.

“She was a woman of faith and dedicated herself to the church,” Nguyen said. She was a member of the Catholic Church.

Tammy Nguyen died of gunshot wounds after a man walked up to her van — idling at a red light in Kaimuki — and opened fire in an apparently random shooting. The gunman would ultimately leave two other people seriously injured in a roadway shooting rampage that stretched from Kaimuki to Aiea.

Nguyen’s 16-year-old daughter, her youngest child, was in the passenger seat of the van when the shooting occurred at Kapiolani Boulevard and Kapahulu Avenue at about 12:43 a.m. The teenager was not injured.

The family also said yesterday that funeral services will be private.
