Man held in stabbing released

A 43-year-old Ewa Beach man who was arrested Saturday following a fight that left a teenager and two men with stab wounds has been released pending further investigation.

Police said the fight stemmed from an earlier traffic incident in Ewa Beach.

A 17-year-old boy and two men, ages 23 and 24, were stabbed with a knife shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday and were taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Police arrested a 43-year-old man at a Papipi Road address on suspicion of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault and deadly weapons offenses.

The events allegedly began when the suspect and one of the victims were involved in a traffic incident in front of the suspect’s home, police said. Words were exchanged, and the victim drove away but later returned with several other males in various vehicles, police said.

When members of the suspect’s family arrived, the argument escalated and a fight broke out in the suspect’s driveway, police said.

Makakilo blaze flares again

Firefighters returned to a gulch between a Makakilo subdivision and H-1 freeway twice Wednesday to put out "hot spots" left over from a brush fire Tuesday that consumed about 100 acres.

Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman, said firefighters responded to several flare-ups about 8 a.m. and stayed until about noon.

Crews returned about 2:15 p.m. to deal with an additional flare-up, this time working until about 2:45 p.m., Seelig said.

Fire investigators could not determine the cause of the blaze, but believe it began near the freeway.

As firefighters were mopping up Tuesday night, they found old military shells on the ground, Seelig said.

Members of an explosive ordnance disposal detail based at Schofield Barracks went to the scene Wednesday.

Staff Sgt. John Renna, EOD team leader for the 303rd Ordnance Battalion, said five intact rounds were located as well as several broken ones.

Renna said the ordnance appeared to have been bazooka training rounds from 1940s-era weapons. They were nonexplosive and were filled with wax, he said.

The rounds were taken to Schofield where they were destroyed.
