Austrian city expected to withdraw Hitler honor

AMSTETTEN, Austria >> It’s taken 66 years — but it looks like the Austrian city of Amstetten is about to strike Adolf Hitler’s name from its list of honorary citizens.

Mayor Herbert Katzengruber says a municipal council meeting slated for later Tuesday is expected to agree to remove the Nazi dictator’s name at the request of a council member from the environmentalist Green party.

Katzengruber suggested he saw no reason to do that earlier. He told the Austria Press Agency that many experts hold that honorary citizenship expires when a person dies.

He says he hopes for “wide support” for the motion to remove Hitler’s name.

Like Amstetten, many Austrian towns declared Hitler an honorary citizen after Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938. Most municipalities removed his name when the war ended in 1945.
