State receives $3.75M for tuberculosis study

State health officials have received $3.75 million in funding as part of a national tuberculosis study.

The Hawaii State Department of Health announced Tuesday its participation in a research study in the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis.

The department’s TB Control program was one of 10 sites chosen nationwide.

A health official says the funding will go toward enhanced services for people with a latent TB-infection or who are at risk for developing it.

With many immigrants coming from Southeast Asia and other areas where the disease is common, Hawaii has a TB rate more than twice the U.S. average.

The project is sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
