Wie wins second-round match at Sybase
Honolulu’s Michelle Wie rallied from two holes down with six to play to capture today’s second-round match over Anna Nordqvist at the $1.5 million Sybase Match Play Championship played in Gladstone, N.J.
The 1-up victory on the 20th hole ended with a par for the No. 9-seeded Wie at the par-5 second and sets up her third-round match with No. 42 seed Sophie Gustafson, a 1-up winner over Paige MacKenzie.
Sweden’s Nordqvist, who won the 2009 LPGA Championship, built a 2-up advantage after Wie bogeyed the par-3 12th. The Punahou School graduate rallied with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 14 and 15 to draw even. Each golfer parred the next four holes before Nordqviist carded a 6 at the par-5 second.
Wie managed four birdies and two bogeyes in her marathon match. She is one of 16 golfers advancing through to the weekend, who will play their third- and fourth-round matches tomorrow.
