Police adjust functions due to APEC
The Police Department is advising the public about changes at its Beretania Street headquarters during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference next week.
From Monday to Nov. 14, arrestees normally processed at the headquarters at 801 S. Beretania St. will be taken to the Kapolei police station, while juveniles will be processed at the Kalihi police station. The public can get information by calling the Kapolei receiving desk at 723-8525 or the Kalihi receiving desk at 723-8207.
There will be no walk-in service for police reports at the Records and Identification Division. Instead, the public is asked to call the division at 529-3271 to get information. The Law Enforcement Museum at the Beretania Street headquarters will also be closed from Nov. 7 to 14.
Firearms registration and sex offender registration will not be affected.
Police said the changes are needed because of the increased security and staffing for APEC.

Head injury sends surfer to hospital
A Lihue surfer who was pulled from the ocean Wednesday afternoon at Horner’s surf spot in Wailua remained in guarded condition Thursday at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, the Kauai Fire Department said.
The 44-year-old man was surfing at about 4:35 p.m. when he apparently hit a rock and was knocked unconscious. Bodyboarders in the area pulled him out of the water and called 911.
Fire rescue personnel, police and medics responded. The man was taken to Wilcox by ambulance.
Pump problem curtails Kauai water usage
Kauai County officials are asking residents and businesses in Kalaheo to use water only for essential uses because of a pumping problem that is not allowing the water tank for the area to be replenished.
Essential needs include cooking, bathing and toilet flushing, the county said.
Officials said an electrical problem occurred at the Kalaheo well site Thursday morning, preventing Department of Water pumps from refilling the storage tank that serves the area.
The county crew was working with the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative to identify and repair the problem. Water conservation efforts by residents and visitors will reduce the likelihood of a water outage in the area, the county said.
For information call the Department of Water at 245-5455 during business hours, 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or police dispatch at 241-1711 after business hours.
