Hawaii drivers are beginning to be mailed vehicle renewal notices instead of registration renewal applications in an effort to save money.

County motor vehicle departments planned to start sending notices Tuesday for June 2011 renewals.

The city and county of Honolulu said in a statement it will save $115,000 by replacing the application form and eliminating the return envelope.

The renewal notice contains all the renewal information that’s currently provided on the renewal application form.

Renewals can be submitted by mail or online..
