Hikers stranded by flash floods rescued

Maui firefighters were kept busy Wednesday coming to the aid of nine hikers stranded by flash floods.

Six hikers were stranded by rising waters in the area known as “Bamboo Forest” near the 6.5 mile marker on the Hana Highway around 4:30 p.m., a fire department spokesman said.

While responding to the first alarm, three more hikers also called for help and said they were stranded further upstream above the third waterfall on the Barbed Wire Trail.

The first group of six hikers were told to move to higher ground. The fire department’s helicopter was able to airlift them out of a cow pasture.

The second group of three hikers also were advised to meet at the cow pasture. The helicopter airlifted the  last hiker to safety just after 5 p.m. No injuries were reported.
