‘Off Map’ canceled, but another ABC series could move to Hawaii
ABC has canceled “Off the Map,” the drama about doctors in the jungle that was shot in Hawaii.
Despite a strong ensemble cast — including Zach Gilford, Mamie Gummer, Jason George, Valerie Cruz and Caroline Dhavernas — the show struggled with ratings since its mid-season premiere in January. It was the brainchild of Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers and Jenna Bans, who have all been a part of the popular ABC medical shows “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice.”
“If a show doesn’t find an audience no matter how good it is, it is going to get canceled,” said Walea Constantinau, commissioner of the Honolulu Film Office.
“Off the Map” was largely shot in a ravine in Whitmore Village and at Kualoa Ranch, but ABC also used the state film studio at Diamond Head. The network’s studio lease expires in July.
But a new ABC series, “The River,” which shot its pilot in Puerto Rico, could move to Hawaii. The network said earlier this year that it was a possibility and the move is not without precedent — “Off the Map” also shot its pilot in Puerto Rico before moving to Hawaii last summer. No premiere date has been announced.
“The River” follows the story of wildlife expert Emmet Cole, who goes missing deep in the Amazon while on a journey around the world with his wife and son. His family, friends and crew set out on a mysterious and deadly journey to find him.
