Vulcans in eighth at NCAAs

Led by freshman Corey Kozuma’s 72, Hawaii-Hilo was in eighth place heading into today’s second round of the NCAA Division II men’s golf championship in Florence, Ala.

The Vulcans carded an aggregate 301 on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at the Shoals Fighting Joe Course, 10 strokes behind first-place Lynn in the 20-team field. Kozuma was in a group of four tied for 11th, three strokes behind leaders Ricardo Gouveia of Lynn, Gavin Lyons of Fort Lewis and Oska Nystrom of CSU Monterey Bay.

UHH freshmen Blake Snyder and Chris Shimomura were tied for 40th at 76, senior Neil Cabico was tied for 48th at 77 and freshman Travis Russell tied for 84th at 82.

Hawaii Prep graduate Kent Graham, a senior on American International, opened with a 73, tied for 15th.

For the first time, match play will determine the winner. Following tomorrow’s third round, the top eight teams will be paired against each other in a quarterfinal Thursday. The final four remaining teams will play Thursday afternoon, and the two remaining teams meet for the title Friday.
