Hawaii residents continue giving to help Japan

Isle businesses, residents give $6 million for relief
Hawaii residents and businesses have donated about $6 million for disaster relief since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the lieutenant governor’s office announced.
The Hawaii Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Japan-America Society of Hawaii each reported collections of about $3 million, Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz said in a news release last week.
"This relief effort has exceeded everyone’s most optimistic projections," said Schatz, whose office leads the Aloha for Japan statewide relief campaign.
The totals include $365,000 donated by Hawaiian Electric Industries, its employees and customers, and more than $200,000 netted in a Lei Day for Japan food-tasting event featuring dishes from Morimoto Waikiki, Chai’s Island Bistro, Alan Wong’s and others.

Weinberg Foundation donates $100K to Red Cross
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation has donated $100,000 to the Hawaii State Chapter of the American Red Cross to support disaster relief efforts in Japan.

"We are so grateful to the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation for their compassion in this time of great tragedy," Coralie Chun Matayoshi, Red Cross Hawaii chief executive officer, said in a news release.
