Officers target speeding drivers
Honolulu police issued 126 speeding citations within three hours this weekend during an islandwide speed enforcement project.
During the enforcement period — between 10:30 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 a.m. Sunday — Traffic Division officers issued 185 citations, including the 126 speeding citations, arrested two people for driving under the influence, and booked three people for alleged traffic offenses.
Last year, 75 percent of speed-related traffic fatalities on Oahu happened between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., police said.
Man arrested in sex assault
A 37-year-old man was arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in a Maili Beach Park restroom Tuesday night.
Police said the assault happened about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The victim, 37, was afraid to run away from her alleged attacker and walked with him along Farrington Highway when she saw an on-duty police officer driving toward them, police said.
She was able to flag down the officer and the suspect was subsequently arrested near Farrington Highway and Mailiili Road shortly after midnight Tuesday.
