Indictment alleges repeated sexual abuse
The alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl by a math teacher on the Hawaiian Mission Academy campus started in October 2008, when the girl was 14 years old and continued until June 2009, according to a state grand jury indictment returned Wednesday.
The indictment charges Bryan Lindberg, 42, of Mililani, with 10 counts of first-degree sexual assault, one count of attempted first-degree sexual assault and five counts of third-degree sexual assault.
Police arrested Lindberg Oct. 26 at Leilehua High School, where he has been working since July 2009 as an algebra and geometry teacher.
He is no longer in custody after posting $200,000 bail through a bail-bond company Monday, said Chris Van Marter, deputy prosecutor.
Machete attack draws grand jury charges
An argument over a tool box led to one man slashing another with a machete in Kalihi last week, said Rebecca Lester, deputy prosecutor.
An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment Wednesday charging McNeil A. Valencia with attempted second-degree murder. Valencia, 24, of Salt Lake, posted $75,000 bail through a bail-bond company Monday and is no longer in custody, Lester said.
Police said Valencia went to a home on Eluwene Street Oct. 26, met with a group of friends and accused the 23-year-old victim of stealing from him.
Lester said Valencia then pulled out a machete and slashed the victim three to four times. She said the two men have been friends for about nine years.
Negligence alleged in car-crash death
A Kauai grand jury has indicted a 33-year-old Lawai man in connection with a two-car crash that killed one man and injured another last year.
Norman Bukoski Jr. was indicted on charges of first- and second-degree negligent homicide involving the death of Tomas Garcia Jr. and first-degree negligent injury involving Aaron Marvin.
Police arrested Bukoski on Tuesday after conducting an investigation into the crash on Kaumualii Highway near the entrance of Kahili Mountain Park on Jan. 19, 2010.
The grand jury indicted Bukoski last week, alleging that he operated his vehicle in a negligent manner while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, causing the death of Garcia and injuries to Marvin.
Bukoski was released after posting $50,000 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Nov. 15.
Hilo resident gets life term in girl’s death
A Hilo man who pleaded guilty to drowning a 5-year-old girl in a bathtub will spend at least 15 years in prison before being eligible for parole.
Anthony Poulin was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison for murdering his girlfriend’s daughter, Javieanne Win, two years ago.
Hawaii News Now reported that because the victim was younger than 8, Poulin was ordered to serve a mandatory minimum of 15 years.
The girl was seen on surveillance camera footage talking with Poulin hours before her body was found in the bathtub.
Poulin did not speak in court.
Snow dusts Mauna Kea
The first snow of the season has fallen at the summit of Mauna Kea.
A weather system that brought heavy rain to the rest of the state sprinkled the state’s highest peak with a bit of snow on Tuesday. Most of the white cover had melted by Wednesday, but more could be on the way.
Victor Dejesus, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Honolulu office, says the system is weakening but lingering. It may bring some heavy rain and thunderstorms to the state today and Friday.
A winter weather advisory remains in effect for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa through 6 a.m. Friday. The weather service said temperatures in the 30s during the day and 20s overnight could bring more snow or freezing rain, along with hazardous driving conditions.
