2 isle schools vying in ‘Glee’ contest
Music programs at two Oahu schools are seeking community support for their efforts to get cash awards from “GLEE give a note,” a program organized by the creator of the hit television show “Glee.”
Enchanted Lake Elementary School in Kailua and Nanakuli High and Intermediate School are the only two Hawaii schools in the nationwide contest, which will award a total of $1 million to school music programs. The schools submitted videos showing students performing and discussing the importance of music in schools.
Nanakuli students are shown rehearsing in the school cafeteria and performing at another school’s auditorium, and Enchanted Lake teacher Gail Yoneshige explains her school’s need for a new piano lab.
The prizes awarded by the contest, which is sponsored by “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy, the Fox network and the National Association for Music Education, range from $10,000 to $50,000.
Supporters of the programs can vote the schools into the final round of the contest by visiting www.gleegiveanote.com. Voting ends Monday; one vote per person per day. A panel of judges will make the final selections, which are expected to be announced in December.

Contest challenges students to think big
The Clarence T.C. Ching “Inspired in Hawaii” 2011 essay, poster and video contest gives local students an opportunity to “dream big and make Hawaii a better place.”
More than 80 awards, including cash prizes, will be provided for the winning entries, which must identify a problem in Hawaii and offer a solution to it. Students must include a supporting statement that demonstrates a clear connection between their project and the life of Clarence T.C. Ching, who rose from humble roots to become a successful businessman and developer.
Students may enter in only one division. The poster division (open to grades kindergarten to 12) and the essay division (open to middle and high school students) will be judged on content, creativity, theme and craftsmanship. The video division, open to high schoolers, will be judged on content, impact, creativity and videography. Video entries will be accepted from both teams and individuals.
Contest rules and entry forms can be downloaded at www.clarencetcchingfoundation.org. Last year’s winning entries are also posted on the website. Mail or deliver entries to Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation, 1001 Bishop St., Suite 770, Honolulu 96813. Deadline for submissions is Nov. 11.
