Suspect in Aala Park death makes court appearance

A 45-year-old man accused of beating a homeless man to death made his initial court appearance this morning.

Barney Kane is charged with manslaughter in the beating death of 45-year-old Gordon Lindberg at Aala Park on Wednesday. Kane is being held on $150,000 bail for manslaughter and a contempt-of-court warrant. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

Kane, from Waianae, turned himself in at the Kapolei police substation Saturday afternoon.

Lindberg, who was homeless, was found unconscious at the park around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and was taken in serious condition to Kuakini Medical Center, where he died. The case was classified a homicide after the city Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Lindberg died of blunt-force trauma to his head.

A homeless man who lives at the park told the Star-Advertiser that he saw Lindberg and another man exchange words before the other man punched him in the face. He said the assailant, whom he knows as Barney, walked away toward Nimitz Highway.
