Maui County Fire Department and Coast Guard personnel helped two people whose sailboat was taking on water off Lanai Monday night.

The boat began taking on water about a mile off Kaumalapau Harbor, fire department spokesman Lee Mainaga said.

The two people on board left the Dove, a 36-foot sailboat, and got onto a dinghy. The boaters called the Coast Guard and the fire department on a cell phone about 11:34 p.m. Monday.

Fire personnel arrived on scene first, spotted the sailboat’s lights and montiored the situation until the Coast Guard arrived, Mainaga said.

The Coast Guard pumped water from the vessel and secured it so the passengers could reboard the sailboat. The Coast Guard towed the sailboat to Manele Bay. It arrived at 3 a.m. and was docked for repairs.

No injuries were reported.
