Kua, UH lead Kauai tournament
The University of Hawaii remained in first place through two rounds of the Kauai Collegiate Invitational golf tournament on Monday at Puakea Golf Course.
The Warriors are at 9-under 567, seven shots ahead of College of Charleston.
Hawaii’s T.J. Kua tied a career low with a second round, 5-under 67 and is at 8-under 136 for the tournament.
Right behind Kua is sophomore Nainoa Calip, who is in second place after shooting a career-low 69 during round two. Calip is at 5-under 139.
Three-time defending tournament champion San Diego is in third place.
Alex Ching, a Punahou School graduate, is in sixth place at 1-under 143 for the Toreros.
The final round is today.
Hawaii-Hilo in Dennis Rose lead
Hawaii-Hilo took the men’s lead after two rounds of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate golf tournament at the Waikoloa Kings’ Course on Monday.
The Vulcans lead at 577, eight shots ahead of Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay, which are tied for second.
UHH’s Jamie Hall leads the race for medalist honors at 4-under 140. He’s one shot ahead of Sonoma State’s Eric Ash.
Hawaii Pacific is in fifth place and Brigham Young-Hawaii is in eighth place.
» Grand Canyon took the women’s lead at 584, three strokes ahead of Cal State Monterey Bay.
Charlotte Jaengkit of Grand Canyon and Courtney Soekland of Cal State Monterey Bay are tied for the individual lead at 1-over 141.
Hawaii-Hilo, led by Erika Morihiro (6-over 146, sixth place) is in third place.
4 have big days to start HIC Pro
Kamalei Alexander, Stephan Figueiredo, Joel Centeio and Kahea Hart posted the highest scores in clean 6-foot waves at Sunset Beach yesterday to start the HIC Pro.
The 4-Star Association of Surfing Professionals’ men’s event is a qualifier for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, which begins Nov. 12.
The eventual winner of the HIC Pro gains a berth into the first two Triple Crown events.
The HIC Pro continues today, surf permitting.
HPU defeats Dominican in volleyball
Sanoe Recca led the way with seven kills as Hawaii Pacific defeated Dominican 25-18, 25-14, 25-16 in women’s volleyball on Monday in Honolulu.
Haley Doerfler hit .571 and Kyra Pelayo had 24 digs for the Sea Warriors.
Skyler Moon powered the Penguins with six kills.
Hawaii sailors finish fifth
The University of Hawaii sailing team finished fifth out of nine teams at the PCCSC Match Race Championship in San Francisco last weekend.
Adam Pokras, Fizz Foster, Craig Shifferns and Madeline Kennedy sailed for UH.
