Seabury Hall’s size proves too much for Lanakila Baptist
They’re big, they’re hungry, and when they play without a hitch, the Seabury Hall Spartans are dangerous.
Seabury Hall’s balanced attack, led by Conner Snow and Rocky DeLyon, was too much for Lanakila Baptist in a 25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 25-16 win last night at Maryknoll’s Clarence T.C. Ching Gym.
"We know they have great competition all year round. They’re scrappy and they’ve got a lot of heart and fight," Seabury Hall coach Caleb Palmer said of the Warriors. "They’re well-coached. It’s a rebuilding year for us. We’re fortunate to get the win."
Seabury Hall, the third seed in the New City Nissan/HHSAA Boys Volleyball State Championships (Division II), will meet Castle at 5 p.m. today in a semifinal. The semifinals will be played at McKinley.
Snow, a 5-foot-10 senior, led with 16 kills and added two blocks. DeLyon, a powerful 6-2 junior, added 14 kills and five aces. The Spartans (13-1) compiled nine aces to dictate the flow. LBA had just two aces.
Setter Max DeLyon, a sophomore, dished 38 assists and spread the Warriors’ defense with his back sets. Alex Wright, a 6-foot senior, and David Dunn, a 6-2 senior, added seven kills apiece. Shane Jacob, a 6-1 junior, chipped in with six kills.

The Spartans were prone to unforced errors at times, but were deadly accurate most of the night. They hit .356 despite 17 hitting errors.
"I’m glad we got a win. I liked our determination," Palmer said. "I didn’t like our unforced errors. That allowed them to get on runs."
DIVISION II YESTERDAY At Maryknoll TODAY At McKinley TOMORROW |
After a difficult start, coach Alicia Antonio’s Warriors made a match of it in the second set. Chad Adachi had five of his nine kills in the game as the Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up tied the match.
However, during a crucial stretch in the third set, a string of mistakes by LBA allowed Seabury Hall to seize momentum for good. It was tied at 9-all when five miscues by the Warriors, including three hitting errors and a line violation, led to a 17-11 Seabury Hall lead.
The Spartans caught fire and took a 23-13 lead before LBA rallied with a 9-0 run. James Tesseir, who had 16 kills, brought the Warriors within 23-22, but Snow put the set away with back-to-back kills.
From there, the Spartans had too much of a motor against the tiring Warriors. LBA hit just .045 in the fourth set as Seabury Hall’s massive block took its toll.
Seabury Hall is No. 5 in the Star-Advertiser Boys Volleyball Top 10.
"All that matters is how you finish at the end of the year," Palmer said.
Micah Miranda had 20 assists for Lanakila Baptist (10-8).

The second-seeded Knights started slowly, but took command in the third game to advance with a 25-22, 14-25, 25-22, 25-15 win.
Senior Charlie Hendrix, a 6-2 outside hitter, led Castle (16-0) with 16 kills and just two hitting errors. Maka Piedad (eight kills), Kasson Carter (nine kills) and Iyama Faatafa (five) gave coach Pat Gomes-Woolsey a balanced attack.
Piedad (24 assists) and Faatafa (eight assists) directed the offense.
"I’m relieved," Gomes-Woolsey said. "The kids were really tense. They were worried about not losing, but as long as they play their game, they’ll be fine. This is one of my most well-rounded teams."
Rokas Cesnulevicius, a 6-8 senior, led coach Sharon Peterson’s HPA squad (10-6) with 13 kills. Keanu Yamamoto added five and Chris Copeland distributed 30 assists.
