No. 1 BYUH upset, HPU moves on

The top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s tennis team was upset by No. 3 Lynn 5-1, while No. 5 Hawaii Pacific won its Round of 16 match over Grand Valley State 5-1 yesterday at the NCAA Division II women’s tennis championship in Altamonte, Fla.

It was the first loss of the year for the Seasiders (27-1) and fourth straight time that BYUH’s undefeated season ended in the national tournament. The Seasiders’ only win came at No. 2 doubles when Annie Hwang and Shawnin Porter defeated Magdalena Ekert and Isabell Raich 8-6.

HPU (19-6) advances to today’s quarterfinal against three-time defending national champion Armstrong Atlantic. Against the No. 14 Lakers, the Sea Warriors won all three doubles matches and opened up singles play when Zora Vickova blanked Tara Hayes 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1. The Lakers picked up their lone point at No. 6 singles, but HPU earned the deciding point at No. 2 with Ielyzaveta Rybakova’s 6-1, 6-3 victory over Niki Shipman

HPU men out in Round of 16

Hawaii Pacific took a 3-1 lead against No. 3 Concordia of New York, but couldn’t hold on yesterday, falling to the Clippers 5-4 in the Round of 16 of the NCAA Division II men’s tennis championship in Altamonte, Fla.

The Sea Warriors (10-9) won two of three doubles matches and the first singles match to be completed, a 6-1, 6-3 win by Ji Hoon-Heo at No. 3. Concordia (24-2) tied the match with singles wins at Nos. 4 and 5, but HPU regained the lead at 4-3 on Sebastian Bader’s 7-6, 6-4 victory at No 2.

The Clippers won the final two singles matches, with Andrey Boldarev rallying to beat HPU’s Petr Michnev 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 to clinch the win.

3 Seasiders honored in tennis

Two players from the top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s tennis and one from the men’s team received national awards at the NCAA Division II banquet in Altamonte, Fla.

Elwen Li Boud was named the Senior Player of the Year and sophomore Annie Hwang the Player to Watch Award by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Hwang finished the regular season as the top-ranked singles player in Division II and was (22-0). Li Boud (20-0) was ranked fourth in singles and No. 1 in doubles.

Also, BYUH Agnel Gladwin-Peter received the prestigious ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship. Gladwin-Peter, a senior from Vashi, India, was 72-17 in singles, winning the USTA/ITA West regional doubles title in 2008. He was the singles runner-up in 2008 and 2009.

Balentine eighth at WAC meet

Hawaii sophomore Samantha Balentine placed eighth in the heptathlon as the Western Athletic Conference outdoor championships continued yesterday at Clarence T.C. Ching Field at the University of Hawaii campus.

Balentine scored a season-best 4,704 points and scored one point for the Rainbow Wahine. Freshman Kaleigh Morrison was ninth with a personal best 4,527.

Utah State’s Chari Hawkins won the event with 5,124 points. Louisiana Tech’s Jesseka Jones was second (5,088) and Boise State’s Alexi Morton third (4,961).

In the only other final completed yesterday, Idaho’s Andrew Blaser won the men’s decathlon (7,037). Utah State’s Phillip Noble was second (6,960) and David Deal of Fresno State third (6,838).

Competition continues today beginning at 2 p.m. with tomorrow’s final day starting at 1:30 p.m.

» Princeville Makai superintendent Seth Miller was named Troon Golf’s Superintendent of the Year at the recent Troon Golf Leadership Conference. Miller was recognized for his leadership during the Makai Golf Club’s renovation in 2009-2010, and maintaining “high-quality turf conditions.” Troon is the world’s largest golf management company.
