No tsunami generated from magnitude-6.9 Peruvian quake

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Peru this morning, but no tsunami was generated.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the earthquake struck 178 miles southeast of Lima, Peru, near the city of Ica, at a depth of about 9.2  miles below the surface at 8:53 a.m. Hawaii time or about 1:54 p.m. Peru time.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says, based on the historical record and other data, there is no threat of a destructive tsunami that could affect Hawaii,

However, the center said an earthquake of this size could generate a local tsuanmi.

The earthquake rattled the capital of Lima, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in Peru.

A police officer in Ica, Ruben Vargas, Peru, says people rushed out of their homes in panic but there didn’t appear to be any damage.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
