Lorens Chan, in pursuit of his second state golf title in three years, opened with a 6-under-par 66 yesterday at Waikoloa Village.

Chan, a junior at ‘Iolani, is in first place in the David S. Ishii Foundation/HHSAA Boys Golf Championships going into today’s final round.

Punahou sophomore Kalena Preus is just a shot back. Two months ago, Chan and Preus finished 1-2 at the Hawaii State Amateur. Two years ago, Chan captured the state amateur and state high school championships as a freshman.

Last week’s girls final was played in 35-mph winds at the Village, but yesterday was warm and calm and the boys tore up the Big Island course.

There are 15 players under par, with six shooting in the 60s. Kamehameha’s Michael Fan played the back nine in 5-under 31 and is two shots out of first. Thayer Schmitz (Saint Louis), Zack Braunthal (Punahou) and Donny Hopoi (Kamehameha) share fourth at 69.

The team championship is also a free-for-all.

Punahou, trying to win its third title in four years, leads after opening with a 6-under 282. Three Buffanblu are in the top 10, with senior Brian Lee holding a share of seventh after a 70.

Moanalua also broke par (286), with Sueng Jae Maeng, John Oda and Tyler Ota all shooting 70. Na Menehune are four shots back. ‘Iolani, which won the team title two years ago behind Chan, is third at 289.

A year ago, Punahou won by eight shots over Moanalua and ‘Iolani.

Today’s final round was scheduled to start at 7 a.m.
