Hawaii County police look for witnesses to baseball bat assaults

Hawaii island police are looking for witnesses to assaults that happened Monday night by a group of men wielding baseball bats at a state park in Hilo.

Six to eight men in four vehicles drove into Wailoa State Park about 7:30 p.m. and attacked three teenagers with baseball bats, police said.

A Hilo man, 18, sustained swelling to his elbow; another Hilo man, 19, had scrapes on his temple and a lump on the back of his head; and a Pahoa boy, 17, complained of swelling to his pinky and the back of his shoulder. All three victims were treated by medical personnel and released.

Police described one attacker as about 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 8 inches tall, 160 to 170 pounds, with a braided ponytail to the middle of his back. One of the vehicles was a blue Toyota Tacoma pickup with chrome rims.

Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed the assault or who knows the identity of any of the attackers to call officer Lawrence Kobayashi at 961-2213 or the police department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311.

Anonymous tips can be made through CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
