Baldwin pole vaulters, Kapolei sprinter break records

KAHULUI, Maui >> Baldwin’s Kristine Felix and Amber Kozaki and Kapolei’s Devin Jenkins broke state-meet records Friday at the Island Movers Hawaii High School Athletic Association Track and Field Championships at War Memorial Stadium.

Felix and Kozaki both broke the pole vault mark of 11 feet, 8 inches set by Felix at last year’s state meet.

Felix cleared 12-6 and Kozaki 12-0. They combined to score 18 points and give Baldwin the lead heading into Saturday’s events.

Punahou, however, is favored after trials to successfully defend its girls team state championship. The boys meet could be close.

Jenkins ran 21.45 seconds in the 200 meters trials to break the mark of 21.89 set by Radford’s Christopher Rainey in 2008.

Jenkins also ran 100 meters in 10.66 seconds in Friday’s trials. It is faster than the state meet record of 10.80 set by Shane Victorino of St. Anthony in 1999. But Jenkins time was judged to be wind-aided, so Victorino’s record stands.

Friday’s events other than the girls pole vault and boys high jump were trials.
