Chun takes silver medal at Pan Am Games
Reigning Olympic champion Carol Huynh of Canada pinned Hawaii’s Clarissa Chun in the 105.5-pound women’s freestyle wrestling final during Saturday’s Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
"I felt like I should have defended it out there and not gotten on my back," said Chun, the 2008 world champion. "It is always fun to wrestle Carol. She is a very technical wrestler. It just didn’t work out well for me."
Chun defeated Guadalupe Perez of Mexico and Carolina Castillo of Colombia to gain the final.
BYUH sweeps Hawaii-Hilo in volleyball
Lauren Hagemeyer had 14 kills and Shih Ting Chen 13 to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii to a sweep of Hawaii-Hilo in Pacific West Conference women’s volleyball Saturday in Hilo.
BYUH won 25-21, 26-24, 25-20 to improve to 13-3 overall and 10-1 in the PacWest. UH-Hilo is now 11-7 and 7-5.
Hillary Hurley had 21 kills for the Vulcans.
Dixie State trips Chaminade in soccer
Francisco Rivero scored in the 14th minute to lift Dixie State over Chaminade 1-0 in men’s soccer at the Saint Louis School field. The Silverswords fell to 0-13-1 overall and 0-9 in the PacWest. Dixie State is 8-4-2 and 7-1.
» Dixie State’s women’s soccer team scored three second-half goals Saturday to defeat Chaminade 3-1 at the Saint Louis School field. Chaminade is now 1-13 overall, 1-8 in the PacWest. Dixie State is 7-7 and 5-3.
» Marc Hope and Osvaldo Bastida scored in the second half to rally visiting California Baptist (10-4, 7-1) to a 2-1 victory over Hawaii-Hilo (2-10-1, 1-7) in men’s soccer. Josiah Motosue scored for the Vulcans.
» California Baptist’s women’s team overwhelmed host UH-Hilo 6-1 to improve to 5-6 overall, 3-2 in the conference. The Vulcans fell to 2-8-2 and 0-6-2.
UH doubles team in regional semifinals
The University of Hawaii women’s doubles team of Jamie Pawid and Katarina Poljakova advanced to the semifinals of the USTA/ITA Regional Tennis Championships with two wins Saturday in San Diego.
Pawid and Poljakova defeated UCLA’s McCall Jones and Pamela Montez 9-7 in the quarterfinals and Arizona’s Hailey Johnson and Susan McRann 9-8 in the round of 16.
