» Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s job approval rating has fallen to 30 percent, the lowest of any U.S. governor, according to an October poll released Friday by Public Policy Polling of Raleigh, N.C. In recent weeks Abercrombie has faced questions regarding his decisions to suspend state environmental and land use laws for military ordnance removal, and to not disclose the names of candidates for state judgeships, and has endured the resignations of a handful of top advisers.

» The Makaha Resort & Spa announced Thursday it will close indefinitely and lay off up to 95 workers Oct. 31 while owner Northwynd Resort Properties of Canada tries to get financing to convert the 173-room hotel to a 102-unit luxury time-share apartment building.

» Astronomer Adam Kraus of the University of Hawaii captured the first direct image of a planet being born from the Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea. Kraus and colleague Michael Ireland of Australia found the "protoplanet," named LkCa 15 b, in the constellation Taurus about 450 light years away.

» Kamehameha Schools announced plans to redevelop the block in Kakaako bounded by Ala Moana Boulevard and Keawe, Coral and Auahi streets into an "eclectic mix of entertainment, restaurants and retail." The $30 million project would also include converting an office building to 54 rental loft apartments.

» After a two-year hiatus, new state Land Use Commission hearings began Thursday on a request by Texas-based developer D.R. Horton to reclassify 1,554 acres of agricultural land in Ewa for the proposed 11,750-home Ho’opili subdivision.

» America’s long and deeply unpopular war in Iraq will be over by year’s end and all U.S. troops "will definitely be home for the holidays," President Barack Obama declared Friday.

» About 55 million Social Security recipients will receive a 3.6 percent increase in benefits next year to help keep up with inflation, the first such cost-of-living adjustment in three years.

» Sheriff’s deputies shot nearly 50 wild animals — including 18 rare Bengal tigers and 17 lions — in a big-game hunt across the Ohio countryside Wednesday after the owner of an exotic-animal park threw their cages open and committed suicide.

» Moammar Gadhafi, the former Libyan strongman who fled into hiding after an armed uprising toppled his regime two months ago, met a violent and vengeful death Thursday at the hands of rebel fighters who stormed his final stronghold in Sirte, his Mediterranean hometown. At least one of his sons was also killed.

» After five years in Palestinian custody, Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit came home Tuesday. In the West Bank and Gaza Strip, thousands took to the streets to welcome the 477 Palestinian prisoners that Israel released in exchange for Shalit. Many called for the abduction of more Israeli soldiers to use as bargaining chips.
