Kalakaua sidewalks fixed in time for APEC
Sidewalks along Waikiki’s main avenue have been repaired in time for thousands of visitors to arrive for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting next month.
Mayor Peter Carlisle said the $5.55 million project was planned before it was determined APEC sessions would be held in Honolulu. His spokeswoman said APEC was a motivation to get the work done on time.
The project’s completion ends eight months of blocked walkways along busy Kalakaua Avenue while crews fixed missing or loose tiles.
Tree roots had also pushed up sidewalks, affecting irrigation and electrical systems.
The work also involved compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Carlisle inspected the sidewalks Friday.
