Kailua woman gets 20 years for ID theft, credit fraud
A state judge sentenced former beauty queen Susan Shaw this morning to 20 years in prison for stealing the identities of 23 people and using them to order fraudulent credit cards and run up thousands of dollars in charges.
Shaw, 36, of Kailua, pleaded guilty in January in two cases involving 140 theft, identity theft, credit card theft, forgery and other charges resulting in a loss of $169,643 by seven credit card companies.
Shaw’s lawyer said the loss was $68,235.
The prosecutor said not all of the victims asked for restitution and that if he had included the losses to retail merchants whose gift cards Shaw purchased with the credit cards, the total loss would have been more than $200,000.
The prosecutor had asked the judge to run the maximum prison terms for the two cases back-to-back for a 30-year sentence.
