Pawid, Poljakova still alive for UH
University of Hawaii freshman Jamie Pawid and junior Katarina Poljakova won matches to advance in the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Tennis Championships in San Diego on Thursday.
Pawid had to win two matches, beating Arizona’s Susan McRann 6-3, 6-1 and Sarah Cantley of Long Beach State 0-6 6-4, 6-1. She will face No. 14 seed Juliette Coupez of San Diego today. Poljakova had a bye in the first round and swept Sianna Simmons of Arizona State 6-4, 7-5 to set up today’s meeting with Laura Claus of San Diego. Hawaii still has four teams in the winner’s bracket of the doubles competition.
Chaminade loses to Dixie State in volleyball
Crystal Powell had 13 kills and 11 digs, but the Chaminade volleyball team couldn’t overcome Dixie State, falling 25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20 on Thursday in St. George, Utah.
Kristina Donathan contributed 40 assists and 11 digs for Chaminade (2-16, 1-11 PacWest) while Alex Shearer led the Red Storm (12-6, 7-3) with 21 kills.
» Hawaii Pacific also fell on the road, losing to California Baptist 25-21, 25-21, 16-25, 25-19 in Riverside.
Sanoe Recca led the Sea Warriors (11-7, 6-3) with 16 kills. The Lancers improved to 14-8, 6-4.
Brigham Young-Hawaii golfers win
Remington Schultz and Doug Bischoff each shot 71 to lead the Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s golf team to a win over Hawaii Pacific on Thursday at Turtle Bay’s Fazio Course.
The Seasiders shot 288 as a team to beat the Sea Warriors by 15 strokes. Chaminade also competed but didn’t have enough players to register a team score.

Miyashiro, U.S. win bronze medal
With 22 blocks and libero Tamari Miyashiro, the U.S. Women’s National Team won the bronze medal in volleyball Thursday at the Pan Am Games. Team USA defeated Dominican Republic 23-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-19, in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The U.S. lost eight of the first 10 points, then rallied to go up 20-18 before falling in the first. It took control in the last three sets, with former Stanford All-American Cynthia Barboza, the team captain, scoring 23 points.
Miyashiro, a Kalani graduate, collected seven digs.
