Strong, resilient women have helped shape the social and multicultural fabric of Hawaii, but their stories are little known.
So women’s stories will be in the spotlight at the fifth annual Distinctive Women in Hawaiian History Program Saturday at the Hawai‘i Convention Center.
Presentations will focus on everything from activists in the women’s suffrage movement to Princess Nahinu Kamehaokalani and Mormon missionary women in the latter half of the 19th century.
Also featured will be women of the World War II era: activist Dora Moon, public health nurse Harriet Kuwamoto and social worker Jennie Lee In. Filipino-American poets will pay homage to women whose lives are in transition.
In the morning, San Francisco-based kumu hula Patrick Makuakane and Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu will perform "Daughters of Haumea: Ancient Women of Hawai‘i," an interpretation of the female goddess Haumea.
Two films, "Barbara F. Kawakami: A Textured Life," directed by Akira Boch, and "Queenie: The Spirit of a Dancer," directed by Maile Loo-Ching, will be screened in the afternoon. The star of the latter film, Queenie Dowsett, will dance hula.

"We can’t afford to limit our worldview by ignoring the voices of women that are largely missing from the official historical record," noted Bob Buss, executive director of the Hawai‘i Council for the Humanities, the program’s sponsor. "This program shares women’s more intimate realms such as the history of our immediate families, communities and social networks."
In the Charlot Courtyard, look for creations by kapa artist Dalani Tanahy, a textile display of Japanese female immigrant clothing from the Barbara F. Kawakami Textile Collection and a lei display.
Also, the Cell Phones for Soldiers Program will collect used cellphones, Cartridge World-Honolulu will collect used printer and ink cartridges and River of Life Mission will collect canned meats and tuna.
