Engine problems force plane to land

A single-engine, two-seat airplane made an emergency landing at Dillingham Field in Mokuleia yesterday afternoon but did so safely.

Neither the pilot nor the passenger, a woman, were injured during the landing at about 12:37 p.m., said Honolulu fire Capt. Earle Kealoha.

The pilot took off from Honolulu Airport for a test flight around the island when he began experiencing engine problems and decided to land at Dillingham, Kealoha said.

The plane did not appear to be damaged, Kealoha said.

Sleepy driver arrested for stolen gun

Pulling over to rest proved to be a bad thing for a 30-year-old Aiea man, who was arrested yesterday morning on suspicion of carrying a stolen handgun in his vehicle.

Police said an officer checked in on a motorist passed out in his car in Kunia around 5:40 a.m.

While checking the man’s identity, the officer discovered a handgun in the vehicle. A check showed the handgun was reported stolen in 2002.

The man was arrested pending a firearms charge.

Suspect sought in Kauai hit-and-run

Kauai police are looking for the driver of a 1993 white Ford SUV involved in a hit-and-run crash that damaged two other vehicles and slightly injured two visitors Friday in Kapaa.

The crash happened about 3:40 p.m. as the SUV made a left turn from Kipuni Way onto Kuhio Highway, a Kauai news release said.

The SUV struck a 2001 white Toyota pickup, which collided with a 2011 white Nissan sedan being driven in the opposite direction.

Paramedics treated two visitors who were riding in the Nissan and released them at the scene. No one else was hurt.

Both the Toyota and Nissan sustained moderate damage and had to be towed from the scene. Damage to the SUV was unknown.

Search ends for missing swimmer

The Coast Guard, Kauai Fire Department and lifeguards have ended their search for a swimmer missing along Kauai’s north shore.

The 63-year-old man from the Czech Republic was swimming with friends in waters off Hanakapiai Thursday and was reported missing by a hiker just before 1 p.m.

The Coast Guard suspended its search at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

A county aerial search continued from 8 to 11:45 a.m. yesterday with no success. The search covered 150 square miles.

The name of the victim, who was not traveling with family, is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Maui officer faces trial in alleged abuse

A jury trial is scheduled June 27 in Circuit Court for a Maui police officer accused of abusing his daughter.

The Maui News reports that Oscar Martin Del Campo, 44, of Kihei, posted $1,000 bail after he was arrested on the misdemeanor charge March 31. The abuse allegedly occurred March 28.

Police earlier said that Martin Del Campo, a 19-year veteran of the department, was on leave from his duties in the Kihei Patrol District.

Martin Del Campo pleaded not guilty Tuesday.
