Patacchia, Florence, Payne all win
Hawaii surfers Fred Patacchia, John John Florence and Dusty Payne all won their second-round heats on Monday in the Rip Curl Pro Portugal in 6- to 8-foot waves at Supertubos.
Patacchia also scored a victory in the third round, which was partially completed. Payne and Florence await their third-round heats when the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour contest resumes today, surf permitting.
Taaca named WAC soccer player of week
Junior goalkeeper Kanani Taaca was named the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for helping the Hawaii women’s soccer team to a win over Fresno State and a tie with San Jose State last week.
It was the second career honor for Taaca, who posted her second shutout of the year in a 3-0 win over the Bulldogs. She followed with four saves in a 1-1 tie against the Spartans, including a key one in overtime to preserve the result.
First-place UH (4-10-1 overall, 3-1-1 WAC) has the week off, then closes the regular season at New Mexico State on Oct. 28 and at Louisiana Tech on Oct. 30.
UH sailors win Stoney Burke regatta
The Hawaii coed sailing team won the Stoney Burke Intersectional regatta against 24 other teams last weekend at Treasure Island in San Francisco.
UH tallied 107 points during the two-day event to close out UC Santa Barbara by 10 points.
Hawaii’s Adam Pokras and Cienna Patmont captured the A division, while teammates Michael Hanson and Bree Nidds finished second in the B division.
Grand Canyon trips Chaminade in volleyball
Stephanie McBride had 18 kills to lead Grand Canyon to a 25-21, 25-16, 25-21 women’s volleyball win over Chaminade on Monday in Phoenix.
Whitney Viveiros had seven kills and 10 digs for the Silverswords, and Crystal Powell had eight kills.
Vulcans tied for third after one round
Hawaii-Hilo is tied for third place after the first round of the Lindsay Olive Wildcats Classic golf tournament at Sevillano Links in Corning, Calif., on Monday.
Host Chico State leads the 16-team tourney by nine strokes at 294, followed by Grand Canyon at 303, with UHH and Saint Martin’s at 310.
Vulcans freshman Jamie Hall is tied for fourth place at 2-over 74, three strokes behind tournament leader Kyle Souza of Chico State.
BYUH downs Dixie State in women’s soccer
Britt Edman scored on Abbie Lever’s free kick in the 59th minute to give Brigham Young-Hawaii a 2-1 victory over Dixie State in women’s soccer in Laie.
Natalie Drewery also scored for the Seasiders, in the eighth minute off a corner kick from Lever.
The Rebels’ Jordan Ross tied it at 1-all with a goal in the 40th minute.
BYUH improved to 8-0-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the Pacific West Conference.

Fabiola da Silva and Kimberly Allard scored for Cal Baptist in a 2-0 women’s soccer victory over Hawaii Pacific at Atherton Field in Kaneohe on Monday.
