Police believe burglars started a fire that heavily damaged a three-bedroom home in Hawaii Kai Monday afternoon and have opened an arson and burglary investigation.

Neighbors told police they saw smoke coming split-level home at 764 Hahaione St. and called the fire department at 3:10 p.m. Fighters arrived within six minutes. About 20 firefighters brought the fire under control at 3:31 p.m. using a compressed air foam system, and extinguished it at 3:48 p.m.

The fire caused an estimated $325,000 in damage to the house and $50,000 to its contents,  fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.

The first firefighting company saw flames coming from the right corner where the bedrooms are located, Seelig said.

After the fire was extinguished authorities discovered the home had been burglarized and property was missing. There are no suspects at this time, police said.

A mother and her teen-age son were not home when the fire broke out, Seelig said. The Red Cross is assisting the family.
