Kauai police search for man who fled into field after vehicle chase
A Hanamaulu man evaded Kauai police Wednesday afternoon after a 3/4-mile vehicle chase that started when an officer attempted to stop his pickup truck.
Police said the suspect, 29-year-old David Borges, is considered armed and dangerous. He’s wanted on a bench warrant as a suspect in multiple criminal investigations.
About 3:55 p.m., a police officer saw a white Nissan pickup truck with a cracked windshield and no front license plate that was traveling southbound on Waiahi Street in Hanamaulu, according to Kauai County officials.
The officer signaled the driver to stop, but the man continued driving, ran the stop sign at the Laulima and Kuhio Highway and collided with another vehicle, according to police. The man kept driving, and the officer pursued him on Kuhio Highway.
As the driver approached Kauai Beach Drive, he crossed the centerline and drove on the opposite side of the highway for a short distance; he then attempted to turn down Kauai Beach Drive, lost control of the vehicle and came to a stop at Kauai Beach Drive and Kuhio Highway. The driver ran from the truck into a field, police saod.
Officers surrounded the area and conducted a search on foot, while the police helicopter did an aerial search.
