The 2012 football schedule will mark the first time in four years the University of Hawaii is not scheduled to play back-to-back September road games.
UH kicks off the 2012 season at the Los Angeles Coliseum Sept. 1, likely breaking in a new starting quarterback to replace three-year fixture Bryant Moniz.
"BYU had an interest (in changing) and I think that was a good change for us," said Jim Donovan, UH athletic director.
The Warriors have not fared well with back-to-back road games in recent years, going 2-4, including 0-2 this year in stops at the University of Washington and Nevada-Las Vegas.
The shift of the BYU game leaves the Warriors with open dates for Sept. 8, Sept. 22 and Dec. 8 , one of which they hope to fill with a nonconference home meeting to complete a 13-game schedule. It will be UH’s inaugural season in the Mountain West Conference, where it will play eight games.
"We’re still looking at the options of plugging in one more game into that schedule," said Carl Clapp, UH associate athletic director.
In addition to USC and BYU, UH has nonconference games with Lamar (Sept. 15) and South Alabama (Dec. 1).
