From Hilo to Hana, gas prices keep going higher

Gas prices on three islands continue to climb, with this week’s highest statewide average price for a gallon of regular gas at $4.582, according to an AAA survey.

Last week’s highest average for regular grade was $4.566 a gallon.

The highest average for a gallon of premium this week is $4.746, compared with $3.838 a year ago.

In Wailuku, Maui, the highest average this week reached $4.963 for regular gas and $5.121 for premium gas. However, AAA does not include the only gas station in Hana in the remote eastern part of Maui, where a gallon of regular gas has been $6.03 and $6.25 for premium for the past week.

Gas stations in Honolulu are charging an average of $4.478 a gallon for regular gas and $4.671 for premium grade. A year ago regular gas was $3.467 a gallon.

In Hilo the average price for regular gas is $4.59 compared with $3.75 a year ago. The average price for premium gas there is $4.837.

Diane Peterson, spokeswoman for AAA Hawaii, said 50 gasoline stations in Hono­lulu, 20 in Hilo and 13 in Wailuku are surveyed each week. The information for the AAA’s weekly fuel gauge report is collected every Wednesday and compiled at its headquarters in California. The information used comes from fleet car transactions.

Nationwide, more than 100,000 self-serve gas stations are included in the AAA survey.

Hawaii is one of 13 states where the average price of a gallon regular gas is $4 or more for a gallon of regular gasoline. The others are Cali­fornia, Connecticut, Illinois, Alaska, New York, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, West Virginia and Washington. Regular gas is also more than $4 in Washington, D.C.

On Kauai the price for gallon of regular gas ranged from $4.54 in Lihue to $4.89 in Princeville and $4.77 in Waimea, according to GasBuddy.com.

The current $3.97 national average for a gallon of gasoline is up 48 percent since Labor Day, Sept. 6, according to AAA, the nation’s biggest motoring group.
