The arrival of the attack submarine USS City of Corpus Christi on Sunday adds a 19th submarine at Pearl Harbor, 130 crewmen and millions of dollars to Hawaii’s economy.

The Los Angeles-class submarine arrived from Guam, where it was replaced by the newly refurbished USS Oklahoma City on March 3. Guam has three of the attack subs.

After leaving Guam April 14, the Corpus Christi completed a “theater security cooperation” port visit in Brisbane, Australia, before heading to Hawaii, the Navy said.

The Corpus Christi will go through extensive maintenance at Pearl Harbor. Of four sub bases in the Pacific — in Hawaii, San Diego, Guam and Washington state — Hawaii has the greatest number of attack submarines.

The 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review mandated that 60 percent of the Navy’s attack submarines be home-ported in the Pacific, a shift from the previous equal split between the Atlantic and Pacific.

“What that equals to here in Pearl Harbor is 18 or 19 subs. City of Corpus Christi puts us at 19 for now, until any future shift,” said Cmdr. Christy Hagen, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Pacific Fleet submarine force.
