Maui cultural officials can’t stop Lahaina Halloween party
LAHAINA, Maui » Native Hawaiian leaders are upset that Maui County cultural officials can’t do anything to stop Halloween celebrations planned in Lahaina.
Leaders consider the event disrespectful and had asked the Cultural Resources Commission to intervene. But the Maui News reported Friday that commission members have no say over the details of this year’s event.
Previously, the commission was asked to approve a large stage in the town’s historic district and allow vendors in Banyan Tree Park. Those items have been dropped this year so there’s no part of the event that falls in the commission’s purview.
Lahaina was once the seat of power for Hawaiian alii and critics say the party should be moved from Front Street.
Foster Ampong said the celebration should be held at a resort area instead.
