Delta Construction Corp. and KSK Foundation of Kapolei have pledged $300,000 to establish two endowments for scholarships at University of Hawaii at West Oahu and Leeward Community College, with preference given to engineering students who reside in West Oahu. These funds are to honor Delta’s founder, Gilbert D. Koba­take, a 1934 graduate of the UH College of Engineering and a retired structural engineer and surveyor. He was owner of Gilbert Koba­take Inc. and a member of the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team.

Chaminade University was awarded a $40,000 seed grant to initiate research on liver cancer by the Alana Dung Research Foundation. Stephen and Ade­lia Dung established the foundation after their daughter, Alana, became ill with leukemia, to support research focused on eliminating the pain and suffering caused by terminal illnesses affecting children.

Chaminade also received approximately $4.1 million over five years from the National Center for Minority Health and Disease of the National Institutes of Health. This award will support student preparation and faculty research focusing on health issues that disproportionately affect Pacific populations.
