This time, there was no stopping Robin Kiyabu.

The 6-foot-2 Punahou senior won the Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys singles title, defeating teammate Brandon Lee 6-2, 7-5 yesterday at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park.

"He’s a good player. I had to play really well," Kiyabu said of Lee. "I was really fresh going into this match. My forehands and my serve were really strong today. I utilized them well."

Kiyabu was seeded first last year, but finished third. He had more than enough motivation.

"We’re friends off the court, but every time we go on the court, it’s a battle," Kiyabu said of the junior.

Bobbi Oshiro of ‘Iolani won the ILH girls title with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over teammate Kristen Poei, a sophomore.

After strong performances in the ILH tourney as a doubles player — runner-up twice — Oshiro went for the singles title this year and finished league play unbeaten.

"Doubles is where I learned discipline. Also, it helps me get different angles on the court," said Oshiro, who spent the offseason weight training with her teammates. "I practice with (Poei) every day, so we kind of get to know each other’s games."

"My topspin shots were going really good. She had a hard time with it. She had hard shots, but I was able to lob them back," Oshiro said, noting that she went through nearly all her bug repellant. The courts were infested by mosquitoes.

Second-seeded Jennifer Laws and Sarah Steele of Punahou defeated Tara Nilsson and Sara Kwee of ‘Iolani 6-2, 6-1 for the ILH girls doubles title.

Kamehameha Schools sophomore Marcel Chan and junior Roman Kop defeated ‘Iolani’s Marco Kobayashi and Darin Poei 7-5, 6-2 for the ILH boys doubles crown.

Kiyabu sees Chas Okamoto of Kauai as the probable top seed for the upcoming HHSAA state championships.

Oshiro wasn’t so sure about who the girls’ No. 1 seed will be.

"It’ll probably go to outer island," the junior said.
