Makiki family is cautious but staying positive after burglary

Yesterday’s Easter festivities brought the Pinkston family of Makiki a bounty of friends, family and glad tidings — but no new leads on who burglarized their home a week earlier.

Police suspect that burglars waited for the Pinkstons to leave for church last week before breaking into their home and stealing, among other things, two computers, a TV, jewelry, an antique ukulele, a Wii console and $20 from their 6-year-old son’s wallet.

Lyndy Pinkston, who serves as children’s pastor at Christ Fellowship Hawaii, lost a carefully planned children’s curriculum stored on one of the computers. The family also lost several one-of-a-kind photos and videos of the Pinkstons’ three young sons, all of which were also stored on the computers.

Just a few days ago, one of the Pinkstons’ sons realized that an oversize Buzz Lightyear doll was among the stolen items.

"The main thing that cannot be replaced is our sense of security," said Connan Pinkston, who said his family has lived at the Makiki home for two years without incident. "It was a little difficult these last few nights putting the kids to bed and sort of wandering around wondering what happened. But we have faith in God, and we know that he will take care of us."

A neighbor’s security surveillance system caught video of the burglars, and police are reviewing the film to try and identify the suspects.

Pinkston said he has also reinforced windows and other access points — "to make it a little more difficult for them to get in" — and is considering investing in a home security system.

Pinkston said he hopes that whoever broke into his family’s home will act according to their conscience and return what they took.

"We believe in the best in people," he said. "Ultimately, we understand the bigger picture. Nobody died and nobody was abducted. We’re thankful for that and for what we have."

Anyone with information on the burglary is asked to call the police.
