Officer is arrested for alleged DUI

A Honolulu police officer was arrested early yesterday on suspicion of drunken driving after allegedly crashing into a utility pole on Kona Street.

William Suarez, 40, was booked on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.

Sources confirmed that Sua­rez is an officer assigned to the Waikiki district.

Suarez was arrested at 5:30 a.m. at the 1100 block of Kona Street and was released that morning on $500 bail. The Hono­lulu Police Department’s public information office did not return a call for comment.

Suarez is the second officer to be arrested for drunken driving in a year. Boyd Kami­kawa pleaded no contest in February to negligent injury and drunken driving and will be sentenced in May.

2 charged in attempted jewel heist

Two men have been charged in the attempted robbery of a Waikele jewelry store on April 9 in which a camera caught two men using a hammer and a shotgun to try to break merchandise cases. The men failed to open the cases and fled in a stolen car that was later found burning in Wai­pahu.

Karl Acosta, 46, the alleged getaway driver, was charged yesterday with first-degree robbery and remained at the police cellblock on $50,000 bail.

Trey Akana-Pulido, 21, who allegedly is one of the men in the video, was charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree arson and two weapons offenses. Police said Akana-Pulido burned the car used in the robbery. Bail was set at $150,000.

A 19-year-old Wahiawa woman who police said was in the vehicle when the robbery attempt occurred at Zales was released without charge.

Mark Ahnee, killed April 14 in a shootout with police, was the second man in the video, police said.

Motorcyclist badly hurt in accident

A 29-year-old Wahiawa man was in critical condition after a motorcycle crash on Fort Weaver Road.

Police said the man was driving a red Harley-Davidson motorcycle makai on Fort Weaver Road near Ren­ton Road when he veered and hit the left shoulder just after 11 p.m. Thursday. The man was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered head and possible spinal injuries, police said.

Crash victim from Waialua identified

The city Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the 40-year-old Wai­alua man who died from injuries he suffered in a head-on crash on Kau­kona­hua Road on Thursday afternoon as Leslie Miya­moto Jr.

Police said a vehicle driven by Miya­moto crossed the center line at about 5 p.m. and crashed into a vehicle driven by a 56-year-old man. Miya­moto was taken in critical condition to Wahiawa General Hospital, where he died. The other driver was taken in serious condition to the Queen’s Medical Center.

Resident flees Kauai home fire

A 58-year-old Kauai woman escaped injury yesterday when fire caused extensive damage to the upper floor of a two-story home on Kamole Road in Kea­lia.

Kauai County said that according to a preliminary report, the resident detected heavy smoke and flames coming from the upstairs and immediately evacuated the house.

Firefighters got the alarm at 11:19 a.m. When they arrived at 11:33 a.m., the upstairs bedroom was fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters from Engine 2, Engine 8 and Rescue 3 had the fire under control within 15 minutes.

The downstairs of the home was not burned, but might have sustained extensive water damage.

The cause of the fire was being investigated.
