State seeks chairman for Reapportionment Commission

The Hawaii Supreme Court is seeking applicants to be chairperson of the Hawaii Reapportionment Commission.

The high court has the authority under the state constitution to make the appointment because the commission members were unable to select a chairperson.

Under state law, the nine-member commission files a reapportionment plan for the state Legislature and U.S. Congressional districts. Political district boundaries are adjusted periodically to account for population shifts.

Because the constitution requires the commission to be constituted by May 1, the high court has only five working days to make a selection, the state Judiciary said.

Applications should be turned in by 2 p.m. Tuesday and the high court will announce its decision next Friday, April 29, the Judiciary said.

The Judiciary said the names of all applicants will be made public.

Applications may be mailed or delivered to Aliiolani Hale, Office of the Chief Clerk, 417 S. King St., Honolulu HI 96813 or e-mailed to chiefjustice@courts.state.hi.us.
