Moore, Bartels win heats

Hawaii’s Carissa Moore and Melanie Bartels both won their second-round heats today at the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bells Beach in Australia.

Moore, ranked No. 1 in the world, rebounded from a first-round loss with two nine-point rides in eliminating Australia’s Nikki Van Dijk, 18.23 to 10.50.

Bartels scored two rare tube rides in defeating Laura Enever of Australia 16.33-12.53.

Hawaii’s Alana Blanchard and Bethany Hamilton were both eliminated by Australian surfers, Blanchard by Tyler Wright 16.00 to 7.16, and Hamilton by Chelsea Hedges 13.03 to 4.83.

Dusty Payne, the only male surfer from Hawaii in the second round, was eliminated by Kieren Perrow of Australia 15.10 to 13.97. The men’s competition was moved yesterday to nearby Wikipop Beach.

HPU, UHH ranked in softball

Both Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii-Hilo are ranked in the latest NCAA Division II West Region softball poll.

Heading into the final two weeks of the regular season, the Sea Warriors (25-8) are No. 3 and the Vulcans (25-11) eighth. The top eight teams advance to the regional championship at a site to be determined.

Vulcans fall on road in tennis

The Hawaii-Hilo women’s tennis team lost to No. 19 Cal State Stanislaus 6-3 yesterday in Turlock, Calif.

Morrisa Kahakui and Ann Hamlin won at No. 3 doubles, Lindsey Shin at No. 4 singles, and Hamlin at No. 5 singles.
