Coast Guard gets new high-tech helicopter
The Coast Guard says Air Station Barbers Point crews have received a new helicopter that will enable them to communicate via satellite and use night vision.
The MH-65 Dolphin helicopter arrived on Saturday, joining one other already at the Oahu base. The advanced communications will allow crews to talk to federal, state and local law enforcement and emergency services.
Pilots on board will be able to use night vision, enhancing their ability to operate around the clock.
The Coast Guard said Monday the upgrade will greatly increase its ability to cooperate with local agencies in an emergency. The helicopters are replacing older HH-65 Dolphin helicopters.
Two more MH-65’s are scheduled to arrive in May. Altogether, Air Station Barbers Point is due to have four of the helicopters.
