TENNIS

Seasiders seeded first

The Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s tennis team opens defense of its PacWest title as the top seed and host Thursday at the BYUH courts.

The Seasiders (22-0), ranked No. 2 nationally, take on eighth-seeded Dominican (5-9) at 8:30 a.m. Other quarterfinal matches have fifth-seeded Chaminade (5-8) against Academy of Art (9-3) at 10:45 a.m. and sixth-seeded Hawaii-Hilo (4-14) against Grand Canyon (14-2) at 1 p.m.

Second-seeded Hawaii Pacific (13-4), last year’s runner-up, faces Dixie State (3-9) at 3:15 p.m. The Sea Warriors are fifth nationally, the highest ranking in school history.

The winners advance to Friday’s championship semifinals at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. The consolation semifinals are at 10:30 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.

The title match is at 9 a.m., with the winner expected to receive a bye into the national tournament, skipping regional play. Matches for third, fifth and seventh places follow.

BASEBALL

HPU sweeps honors

Hawaii Pacific’s Blake Amaral was named the Pacific West Conference player of the week and Peter Ibanez the pitcher of the week yesterday.

Amaral, a junior infielder out of Kamehameha, hit .400 (6-for-15) to help the Sea Warriors go 3-1 against Dixie State last week. He had six RBIs on a double, triple and homer, with five runs scored.

Ibanez, a freshman pitcher out of Maui High, tossed a seven-inning shutout of the Red Storm, scattering two hits, walking two and striking out five.

>> Michael Greene, HPU: The senior righthander struck out three and allowed no earned runs on three hits over seven innings in the Sea Warriors’ 9-3 win over Dixie State.

>> Toby Inouye, HPU: The senior righthander out of Kaiser struck out 10 with six hits in 7-plus innings in a no-decision against the Red Storm. The Sea Warriors lost 7-5 in 11 innings.

>> Rylan Morihara, HPU: The junior outfielder out of ‘Iolani scored twice and had two RBIs in four starts for the Sea Warriors.

 >> Brent Queen, HPU: The sophomore righthander struck out five when allowing six hits and two earned runs in a complete-game victory over the Red Storm.

 >> Kale Sumner, HPU: The sophomore infielder out of Kailua hit .462 (6-for-13) with two runs scored, three doubles and four RBIs.

SOFTBALL

Honor roll

>> Samantha Ford, CU: The freshman infielder out of Word of Life hit .583 (7-for-12) on a 1-3 week for the Silverswords, with four RBIs and three runs.

>> Chante Tesoro, HPU: The sophomore outfielder out of Hawaii Baptist hit .625 (5-for-8) in a doubleheader sweep of Chaminade, with five runs scored, an RBI and a 1.000 slugging percentage.

Tickets are on sale for Hawaii-Hilo’s all-sports banquet, April 26, at the UHH gym.
