Pair unsuccessful in jewelry heist

Police are looking for two men who unsuccessfully tried to rob the Zales Outlet jewelry store Saturday night in Waikele and left in a stolen car that was later found burning.

Both men wore masks, and one was armed with a shotgun while the other used a hammer or similar tool to unsuccessfully try to break into the display cases at about 8:40 p.m., police said.

The men were described as being in their 20s.

They are being sought on suspicion of first-degree robbery, first-degree reckless endangerment, driving a stolen vehicle and first-degree arson.

One of the men allegedly struck several display cases with a hammer or similar tool but still could not get to the jewelry, police said. The other man then allegedly shot the display cases, but they failed to shatter, police said.

The men then allegedly fled in what turned out to be an unreported stolen vehicle that was later discovered engulfed in flames, police said. Witnesses gave police the license plate of the stolen car.

1-car crash injures Central Oahu men

Two men were in critical condition following an early morning automobile crash yesterday on notoriously treacherous Kaukonahua Road.

According to police, the two men were traveling north in a two-door Pontiac when the driver, a 22-year-old Mililani man, lost control of the vehicle.

The car veered onto the east shoulder, knocked down a wooden telephone pole and continued northward until it hit and knocked down a second pole. Both the driver and his passenger, a 22-year-old Schofield Barracks man, were ejected from the car onto a grassy shoulder. The car came to rest at a concrete culvert.

Both men were transported to the Queen’s Medical Center. The driver was originally reported to be in serious condition but was later downgraded to critical.

The crash happened at about 2:30 a.m.

Police temporarily closed Kaukonahua Road from Kamananui Road to Wilikina Drive.

Police said speed and alcohol might have been factors in the crash. It is unknown whether the two men were wearing seat belts.
