State courthouse on Maui in disrepair
WAILUKU >> The state courthouse on Maui has a leaky roof, elevators that only work part of the time, and a frayed carpet.
Retired 2nd Circuit Court Judge Joel August told The Maui News the Hoapili Hale staff are doing a good job with the resources they have. But he says they lack the money to fix up a building that opened in the mid-1980s.
One of the two public elevators is often out of service. Sometimes both are out at the same time.
Files are crammed under tables at the office where the public goes to file complaints and inspect records. Lawyers have to get on their knees to retrieve them.
Officials have to put out buckets to collect rainwater during Kona storms.
