Man rescued from Hanauma

Firefighters rescued a man from a cliff at Hanauma Bay yesterday afternoon.

Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the man, who appeared to be in his 80s, was seriously injured. He appeared to have climbed over a railing from the upper parking lot, Seelig said, and was about 40 feet below the lot.

Seelig said firefighters did not know why the man climbed over the railing.

Fire rescue personnel rappelled down and reached the man tangled in a stand of kiawe trees at 2 p.m. He had been seriously injured by the cliff’s rough rock face and kiawe trees.

Rescue personnel placed him in a metal basket and airlifted him by helicopter. He was transferred to Emergency Medical Services personnel at 2:30 p.m.

Police seeking identity of man

Police are continuing an investigation of the death of a man found Friday at Moanalua Community Park.

Sometime before 11:30 p.m., police said, the 42-year-old man was found unresponsive by a friend who was driving by the park. The friend saw him lying on the ground in the parking lot near the basketball courts.

Police said the man suffered from head injuries and was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 12:45 a.m.

Police said they believe he was involved in a fight but are trying to determine whether the fight occurred at the park or elsewhere, according to Detective Gordon Makishima.

Police received several tips of the man’s identification during the weekend after CrimeStoppers asked for the public’s help, but his identity remains unconfirmed at this time, according to Sgt. Kim Buffett of CrimeStoppers. He has a large tattoo of a tiger on his back.

The case has been classified as an unattended death pending an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Search nets drugs, cash and suspect

A 58-year-old North Kohala man has been charged with methamphetamine trafficking and other offenses after vice officers searched a Kapaau home Friday.

They found 94.7 grams of packaged methamphetamine and associated paraphernalia, including digital scales, police said.

Officers also recovered $10,920 in cash, police said.

Kenneth Tomomitsu was charged with first-degree methamphetamine trafficking, second-degree meth trafficking, second-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Tomomitsu’s bail was set at $69,000.

1 arrested, another hurt in truck crash

A 32-year-old Hanalei man was arrested Sunday night after crashing his vehicle into the Waipa Bridge.

The man was heading east on Kuhio Highway when his Toyota Tacoma crossed the center line and struck the west end of Waipa Bridge, police said.

Police were called to the scene at 8:24 p.m. and arrested the man for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. He was later released on bail.

The passenger, a 30-year-old man from Hanalei, was riding in the bed of the truck at the time of the collision and sustained a laceration on his head. Medics took the man to Wilcox Hospital for further medical treatment. His condition was not known.

The bridge was closed for about 1 1⁄2 hours as crews cleared the vehicle from the roadway.
